John Beigel, M.D., is a clinical research leader with more than two decades of experience directing therapeutic and vaccine development across major infectious disease outbreaks. As Acting Director and Associate Director for Clinical Research in NIAID’s Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, he oversaw a large clinical research portfolio spanning influenza, Ebola, Zika, dengue, monkeypox, and COVID-19. Dr. Beigel led the Adaptive COVID-19 Treatment Trials (ACTT), the platform trial behind remdesivir’s approval and baricitinib’s adoption as standard of care, and directed early-phase testing of the Moderna (mRNA-1273) COVID-19 vaccine. He also led early-phase Ebola vaccine trials during the West Africa outbreak and directed NIAID’s vaccine research response to the 2022 monkeypox outbreak, giving him direct, cross-disease experience standing up rapid-response trials for emerging pathogens.

Dr. Beigel is a recognized thought leader with extensive publications in high-impact journals and has served as an invited expert to FDA advisory committees, WHO technical groups, and global scientific forums. He received his M.D. from the Medical College of Ohio, completed residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati, and fellowships in Infectious Diseases at Massachusetts General Hospital and Critical Care Medicine at the National Institutes of Health.
