Dr Margarida Alho is a Medical Doctor, Veterinarian and PhD with a multidisciplinary background in human health, animal health and epidemiology.

She graduated in Medicine from NOVA Medical School, NOVA University Lisbon (2019), and holds a Master’s degree in Public Health from the National School of Public Health, NOVA University Lisbon (2025), where she also collaborates as a researcher.

Prior to this, she graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Lisbon (2012) and completed a European PhD in Veterinary Sciences at the University of Lisbon, in collaboration with the University of Zurich and the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, NOVA University Lisbon (IHMT-NOVA), focusing on the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases.

Since 2024, she has been working at the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (DG HERA) in Brussels, within the Threats and Medical Countermeasures Intelligence, Innovation and Funding Unit. Her work focuses on vector-borne diseases, environmental and climate-sensitive health threats, medical countermeasure preparedness and the One Health approach.

Dr Alho has authored 37 peer-reviewed international publications (19 as first author), delivered more than 100 presentations at national and international scientific conferences, and serves as a reviewer for several international scientific journals.
